Proven, Reliable Orthodontic Treatment
Traditional Metal Braces
If you’re interested in correcting your smile, or your child or teenager needs orthodontic treatment, traditional metal braces are a tried-and-true option. Today’s braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more convenient than ever, making them a great choice for improving the appearance of your smile.
The Treatment Process
What to Expect with Braces
Traditional braces use a series of brackets that are attached directly to your teeth. An “archwire” is run through these brackets, and this is what guides your teeth into the proper position. The archwire is secured with a series of “ligatures,” which are rubber bands that wrap around the wire and bracket. Over a period of 1-3 years, your braces will be regularly adjusted by Dr. Patel, and your teeth will be moved into the proper position in your mouth, ultimately correcting your bite and jaw position.
Why Choose Metal Braces?
The Benefits of Traditional Braces
- Smaller, stronger brackets – Compared to ceramic braces, steel brackets are smaller and are usually stronger, allowing for the use of more corrective force when shifting the position of your teeth.
- Versatile and effective – Metal braces are the best way to treat complex orthodontic issues because of their strength and durability. Since they aren’t removable, you don’t have to worry about remembering to wear them or taking them out when you eat.
- Affordable – Though this may vary based on your needs, metal braces are usually the most affordable method of orthodontic correction. They may even be fully or partially covered by your insurance company, depending on your plan.
How It Works
Orthodontic treatment places pressure on the teeth to change their position into a more healthy, aesthetically-pleasing alignment. After your braces are applied, they are adjusted to provide the proper pressure and push them into the correct position. As your teeth are gently moved, the roots press against the underlying bone. Over time, this causes the piece of bone next to the root to dissolve, which allows the tooth to move in the direction that it’s being pushed.
Once the tooth is moved, new alveolar bone will build up in the space where your tooth’s root used to be, preventing it from moving back to its original position. Over time, this process is used to move all of your teeth permanently into proper position and alignment.
Starting the Process
The First Steps
After you’ve been approved for braces, Dr. Patel will create a comprehensive orthodontic plan for you. Then, you’ll come in to have your braces applied. This process usually takes about 1-2 hours. Dr. Patel will clean your mouth and use a special type of dental adhesive to bond the brackets onto all of your teeth, then place an archwire through the brackets, securing it in place with rubber ligatures. You may feel some pressure on your teeth after the initial placement, but it should subside in a few days.
How Long Does Treatment Take?
Treatment Time with Braces
Treatment time depends on your particular needs for orthodonture. Some people may wear braces for a year, while others may need to wear braces and other orthodontic devices for 3+ years. On average, though, most patients will wear braces for 18-24 months. During your consultation, Dr. Patel will go over what you can expect from your treatment and give you an estimated treatment time based on the desired outcome for your smile.
What Can I Eat and Drink with Braces?
If you decide that braces are the right treatment option for you or your child, this treatment does have a number of dietary restrictions that should be strictly followed to avoid damaging your braces. As a rule, you should avoid all foods that are extremely sticky, hard, or chewy. Sticky, chewy foods can pull your brackets out of position, and hard foods can also cause damage to your braces. When your braces are placed, Dr. Patel will discuss all of your recommended dietary restrictions during your appointment, and you can always feel free to call our team if you have any questions throughout your treatment.
Proper Care And Oral Hygiene
How To Keep Your Clear Braces Clean
Since ceramic and clear braces are more prone to staining than non-porous metal braces, it is critical that patients keep their braces clean. It is important to brush your teeth 2-3 times per day, for at least 2 minutes, and floss once per day. You should continue to see your dentist for regular six-month cleanings to prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar. We also recommend brushing your teeth after drinking beverages like coffee, tea, or wine, or at least rinsing with mouthwash or water. This will help minimize your risk of stains during treatment.
The Cost Of Orthodontics
How Much Do Braces Cost?
The cost of metal braces varies quite a bit depending on your case. The best way to get an informed estimate is to see Dr. Patel for a consultation. During your appointment, he will go over all of your orthodontic options and help you make the best choice for your smile and your budget. We also offer patient resources and flexible payment options to keep quality orthodontic care affordable.
