Early Orthodontic Intervention
PHASE 1 ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT
Phase One Orthodontic Treatment or Early Orthodontic Treatment refers to a multi-step orthodontic approach that is started at an early age and completed once your child’s permanent teeth have grown in. This type of treatment approach is not indicated for every child. It is often reserved for children who have severe crowding, impacted teeth, narrow jaw bones, or finger habits. Early Orthodontic Treatment allows Dr. Patel to adjust your child’s jaw structure in a painless way before their permanent teeth grow in and minimizes the need for extensive treatment in the future.
TYPES OF PHASE 1 TREATMENT
Phase One Orthodontic Treatment typically begins between the ages of 7-10. It focuses on issues related to the jaw and seeks to help the permanent teeth develop properly. If your child has excessively crowded teeth due to a small jaw, then a palate expander may be used to help encourage growth and make room for all of the permanent teeth to fit. Other forms of Early Orthodontic Treatment involve limited braces, space maintainers, and headgear. Phase One Orthodontic Treatment can help lead to long term stability and very conservative treatment overall.
HOW LONG DOES TREATMENT TAKE?
PHASE 1 TREATMENT TIME
Phase One Treatment typically lasts 9 to 12 months. Once treatment is completed, your child will wait through a “resting period” while their remaining permanent teeth grow in. During this time a retainer will be provided to be worn every night and Dr. Patel will schedule 3 month check-ups to monitor your child's growth and development.
