Keeping You Informed

Orthodontics FAQ

We know that making the decision to receive orthodontic care can be intimidating, and that’s why we provide all the information you need to make the best decision for you and your family. Here are a few common questions we hear about orthodontic treatment along with answers from our team. If you still have questions, feel free to contact us at (215) 398-0794.

When to Get Treatment

Do I Really Need Braces?

If your teeth are crooked, crowded, or if there are gaps between some of them, you would most likely benefit from orthodontic treatment. If you bite down and notice that your upper teeth cover all of your lower teeth, or if your lower teeth extend in front of your upper teeth, you may need treatment. If you are constantly biting the sides of your cheek or hitting the roof of your mouth with your teeth, this could also indicate that your teeth are not properly aligned and that orthodontic treatment may be necessary.

Know Your Options

Which Orthodontic Treatment is Best?

The best orthodontic treatment for you will depend on a number of different factors including the severity and type of your orthodontic issues, your age, and your lifestyle. During your consultation, Dr. Patel will assess your teeth, gums, and jaw to determine whether metal braces, ceramic braces, or Invisalign are right for you. After this initial exam, he will have a discussion with you about your goals and budget, and give you honest advice about which treatment will be best to correct your issues.

Care for Little Smiles

Does My Child Need Braces?

The best way to know whether or not you should bring your child in for an orthodontic consultation is to see a general dentist regularly for six-month checkups. Your pediatric dentist will track your child’s oral development and recognize symptoms that indicate orthodontic issues.

However, you can keep an eye out for these common signs and schedule an appointment if you notice any of the following:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth (Baby teeth should start falling out around age 5, and your child should have all permanent teeth by age 13)
  • Difficulty chewing or biting properly
  • Speech impediments
  • Mouth breathing
  • Prolonged thumb sucking
  • Protruding teeth (bottom and top teeth extending away from each other)
  • Crowded front teeth around age 7-8

What to Expect

Will Braces Hurt?

Orthodontic correction does not often hurt, though you may feel a small amount of discomfort for a couple of days as your teeth, gums, cheeks, and mouth get used to your new braces.

Time Commitment

How Long is Treatment?

This depends on your specific orthodontic issues and the type of treatment you choose. Some minor cosmetic cases can be treated in six months, while other procedures can last a few years. To get a better idea of what to expect and how long your treatment will take, we recommend scheduling a free initial consultation with Dr. Patel.
